With reference to your telegram No. 144 of 2nd December, 1931, on the subject of the sale of an area of land
84834/31 at Kowloon to the Hong Kong and China Gas Company, I have the
Enclosure No.1.
honour to inform you that the Company does not now wish to acquire the site in question, but has applied for a smaller area, of about three acres in extent, immediately to the north of the area originally applied for, and shown coloured
red on the enclosed plan.

2. The negotiations with the Company for the acquisition by them of this alternative site have been complicated by the existence of a concession, which with others was granted to them in 1888. This concession reads:-
The Government at the discretion of His Excellency
"The Governor grants at all times to the Company a free
right of way through the streets from their works to the
water side with power to build a landing stage if necessary
"for the unloading of coal, lime ac.
The present Kowloon gas works are on Kowloon Inland Lot No.395, which was acquired by the Company in 1892, and the right of
way which arises as a result of the concession runs from this
lot to the end of Jordan Road. As this is to be the terminal
point of the Vehicular Ferry Pier it is most desirable that
